What makes a 4 leaf clover?

clovers have 3 leafs, but there are some that have 4. how and why does this happen? i think it might have something to do with genetic mutation, but im not sure.

    It is debated whether the fourth leaflet is caused genetically or environmentally. Its rarity suggests a possible recessive gene appearing at a low frequency. Alternatively, four-leaf clovers could be caused by somatic mutation or a developmental error of environmental causes. They could also be caused by the interaction of several genes that happen to segregate in the individual plant. It is possible all four explanations could apply to individual cases.

  2. it is most likely a genetic mutation. It's like how some kids are born with less than normal body parts or more.

    and after the mutation occurs and it reproduces, it now has that allele for the mutation in the offspring's DNA.

  4. I don't know the answer to your questions (but I would agree that it might have something to do with a genetic mutation).  I just wanted to say that I have seen both 5 and 6 leaf clovers as well.
