Question:

What makes a B&G Macaw go to take food from your fingers, then try to nip your fingers?

Sometimes he will take the food, then other times he will go to take the food and nip my finger....He has made contact a couple of times, it doesn't hurt, it more startles me...Any advice??

  1. Is he actually bite-nipping or is it more friendly-touch-mouthing? If it's bite-nipping then definitely don't give him the treat afterward. He needs to know that nipping is not okay, and if he's going to nip you then he doesn't get a treat.

    Also pay attention to how you hold the treat; my cockatiels used to always nip my fingers if I held on to it too tightly or didn't give them enough space to get their beak around it (my fingers were in the way).
