  1. How about luck.

  2. The way he manages. I'm a Braves fan...so I get to watch Bobby Cox, one of the best managers of all-time out there. The best example I can give you is 2005 (one of the years Bobby won Manager of the Year). Bobby did not have the players. We started 13 different rookies over the course of the year. This season was known to Braves fans as the year of the Baby Braves. The way Bobby managed this team won us the division title.

Some of these players have gone elsewhere and shown they're not as great as they seemed that year (Wilson Betemit, Ryan Langerhans for example), plus we had a staple in our rotation, Mike Hampton, go down for the season about halfway through (and we've all seen the story since then  :)  ). It was the way Bobby managed that fired the young guys up. Caused them to step up and win the division. Without him, the team could've done awful that year with such little experience. While he did have some very talented players, he turned some mediocre and below average players into key players for our team for that year. Talent means nothing if uncontrolled, and Bobby was able to control it and bring out the best in everyone.

  3. the way that he manages, lou pinella (cubs) is not a good manager, and they win anyways...

but bob melvin (dbacks) is a good manager, doesent argue, and they still win..

  4. The way he manages a team is what makes a good manager. Joe Torre is a perfect example of that when he led the Yanks to 4 titles from 1996-2001.

  5. it takes a combination of both

I think the players can really make a manager look good, but you need a manager who can really handle his team to get the best out of them.

  6. The way he manages.  Look at Tony La Russa and the job he's done in St Louis.

Girardi has no control of the injury bug that bit the Yankees this year.  I think he's done a pretty good job this year considering all the injuries and lack of pitching.  He's a good manager.  He did a great job with the Marlins.

  7. Its the way he manages the players he has ! Perfect example to me of a solid manager is when a manager can take a team full of unproven and inexperienced players and make them a respectably competitive team . Joe Torre before he came to the yankees actually managed alot of teams that even thou they may not always went to the playoffs, they over achieved . Joe Giradi for example almost took a young inexperienced Marlins team to the playoffs . Lou Pinelli is another good manager who is able to get his teams to believe in themselves and become competitive , He was responsible for the highest win total in Rays franchise history when he managed them .

  8. When you ask what makes a good manager, you look at the way he manages...Good managers do wonders with average players. Bad managers do nothing. Simple as that

  9. The way he manages. It does help to have good players, but if a manager manages well, that's what makes him good. When a manager manages well, usually it helps them succeed. One example, the A's are not doing good right now, partly the players, but a big chunk is the manager. He has not been managing well and putting in players (pitchers) that are causing them to lose. Good question. here's a star. =]

  10. I think a good manage is when that person makes smart, strategic moves with the players he has.  He needs to know the game inside and out. He needs to know his players inside and out.  Ex: If you have a really good relief pitcher but know that he isn't good under pressure, make him a setup man instead of a closer.  You have to know who to put into the game, who to take out.  A good manager knows how to strategically manage and knows the game and his players like the back of his hand. A plus is when he has passion, and if that means arguing a call every once in a while, then so be it.

  11. Tony Larussa is putting together a fantastic season with a team that has half the talent of the 2006 world series champions.  Not to mention he has to deal with 19 injured players in total this year.

  12. Do only East Coaster's answer Yahoo Baseball questions?

Mike Scioscia is the reigning best manager in baseball.

The Angels got very little support in the preseason polls and even the Mariners were picked by some to win the AL West.

    The difference is Mike Scioscia.

He began the season with two of his pitching aces unavailable and then he

held a non hitting team together and kept them winning until the hitters woke up after July 1st. and started to beat the "you know what" out of the opposition.

Now the Angels are 14 games in front of the second place Rangers and have the best record in all baseball.

Managing is an art and Scoiscia has mastered it.

  13. The way he manages because Joe Torre (Former Yankee manager) had great players but didn't do a good job of managing so they fired him. Players don't matter it's how to manager does.

  14. It's a combination of both.  The Pirates could have the greatest manager in the world but it wouldn't matter because they don't have the talent.  A talent laden team can also be mismanaged into a non-contender.

  15. the way he manges because torre was more looser and giradi is dead series all the time

  16. Its about the way he manages. You can have all the super stars in the league (Hamilton, Jeter, A-Rod, Ichiro, etc) and be really crappy if the way you manage fails.
