How do Tomboys become Tomboys?

There's so many different ways from girls who were raised by their dads or homosexual childhood. But then I read about gender indenity disorder and how that shows up in a lot of sources about Tomboys. That and people who are transgender. But anyway, my main question is How do Tomboys become or end up Tomboys? Is it more of a personality thing, something in psychology that wants then to not conform to their typical gender role? What's the science behind it?
