  1. A dutch oven is a hick-walled iron (usually cast iron) cooking pot with a tight-fitting lid.  Dutch ovens are well suited for long, slow cooking, such as in making roasts, stews, and casseroles.  A dutch oven looks like this:

On the other hand...a regular oven (conventional oven) s a kitchen appliance and is used for roasting and heating. Food normally cooked in this manner includes meat, casseroles and baked goods such as bread, cake and other desserts.  Ovens usually can use a variety of methods to cook. The most common may be to heat the oven from below. This is commonly used for baking and roasting. The oven may also be able to heat from the top to provide broiling.  A picture of a regular oven can be seen here:

    Hope this helps!! :)

  2. A Dutch Oven brings to mind campfires  -- the original roots of a Dutch Oven were in using them back-in-the-day (waaaaay b4 my day!!)...1600's.  They were cast-iron pots/oven were used above a fire or buried beneath the fire.    What we see/can buy today are remnants of the bygone era, but still very useable today on top of the stove or in a typical oven.

A heavy, tight lid keeps the moisture in and in the food.

    HTH.

  3. A 'regular' oven is a heating chamber, fired by gas, electricity or fire. A Dutch oven is a large, heavy duty pot with a tight fitting lid that can be used on top of the stove or in the 'regular' oven.

    Edit

the dutch oven was often used before the stoves became popular and they were used over an open fire or in the coals...
