What makes a good botanist?

  1. If I had to pick one characteristic for a good botanist, it would be observation.  A good botanist must be able to look at each plant and see it differently from all others.  They should be able to understand how it should work and how it should look and pick up on the little things that don't fit. Whether he/she works with disease, nutrition, physiology, breeding, etc., it will always require a keen sense of observation.  Attention to detail is also a good quality to have.


  2. Patience - Plants do not normally react as quickly to stimuli than animals, and the reactions may be more difficult to observe.  Propagation can be frustrating at times, too.  That being said, botany is so much better than zoology because (a) most plants smell better than most animals and (b) you don't care as much when they die.
