  1. I am not a Singapore Born Singaporean.  So, my view can only be your reference.

If you want to be a Singaporean type of manager, ehhhh, better not.

Be a good manager in Singapore culture, you need to be:

    1. Humble to learn before you know every single things well, so that no one can bully you.

    2. Appreciate what little things your staff have done, even though those are so little and unimportant

    3. Cannot boast a single person in front of everyone, as others may not be happy and they may can't take it.

    4. Most people like to leave office on time, so don't give them work that late, otherwise they may curse you.

    5. Most people are quite lay back, so you need to follow up tightly with gentleness.

    6. If you let them know accidently about your high qualification, they will be more obedient in future.

    7. If you are generous to treat them once in a while, they will love you.

    8. If you scold them once and even in public, they will "discuss" behind your back and depreciate all your goodness in future.

    9. If you can crack jokes, your marks will increase.

    10. Some people don't have enough knowledge, common sense and ability to do their tasks, you may need to set guidelines and sometimes even procedures.  You may need to prepare to clear up their mess without scolding them seriously. If you can do those, you will be the beloved boss.  Of course, if they are able to be trained, you don't need to work to death.

    11. In general, Singaporeans who are educated in Singapore are usually more stubborn with less common sense, understanding and creativity.  Unless you employ "other people", otherwise you need to deal with them.

    12. A smile or little talk when you see your staff, they will feel that you are friendly and they are somebody.  But most Singaporean can only get used to British accent, talking too fast and too much may scare them away except Singaporean educated overseas.

    13. Don't try to change the system too much when you arrive.  Most people prefer to stick to their old ways as their ability of adaptation is quite weak.  You may need to let them know the reasons for change and the change will be better for them.

    14. If you outshine other managers too much, you may be "alone".

    15. You need to analyse what people tell you before you accept it as the fact and truth, as some people like to bluff and anyhow give you a "fact" without blinking their eyes.

    16. In general, there are not many professionals but a lot of "people person".

    17. Your instruction has to clear and firm, otherwise they may delay it.

    18. If you want to know what people talk "in front" of you or behind your back, you may need to learn mandarin and even Hokkian (most popular dialect).  Or, just don't care what they talk about.

    Good luck to you!!
