i believe novice isn't first year/beginner but green in a way. a horse that is trained but not perfect, still learning

one in the first season in which it wins race over hurdles is novice hurdler til end of season but can then become novice chaser til the season it wins first chase at end of that season it is no longer eligible to run in novice races
