  1. You have to be born with it. /

  2. Um, Someone that will go out of there way to help you, and generally want to. Someone who is always there for you without you having to ask. Someone that will take you to one side if you seem troubled and ask you can they help or is something the matter. Someone who's doors always open no mater what time or day.

  3. By definition:

    Caring: Present participle of care

Care (noun):  1.)A concern or responsibility.

2.) The career/subject of looking after people.

3.) Not looked after by parents or foster parents (in care).

Care (verb): to care (third-person singular simple present cares, present participle caring, simple past and past participle cared)

(intransitive) To be concerned about, have an interest in.

    (intransitive) To look after.

(intransitive) To be mindful of.  Polite or formal way to say want.

  4. Personal caring comes from being born with a caring personality trait.

There was a Pysch study that I read about in college that found that one could not get empathy by accademic means only.  One had to have the traits of caring from birth.

Once could hone in the characteristic though however again the characteristic had to be there at the first.

Now if you have the characteristic I would say.  That one's personal experience of pain and suffering can lead to someone caring for another.  The pysch concept of the Generalized Other.

By behaioral roll modeling through motivational pyschology has a lot of infor on this.  However believe it or not people are not apt to care as much as you imagine.
