What makes a sea wave barrel/tube?

On some days you get super hollow spitting barrels and on other day you cant even see a little barrel. What makes a wave tube?

  1. when a large wave suddenly hits an under water obstruction the bottom part slows down and is pushed up the top part is moving faster and curls over, then it hits the water in front of the crest.
