  1. "Digital TV" generally refers to the way that the TV signal is supplied to you. If you have a digital cable or digital satellite service, then the set-top-box (supplied by your service provider, or freeview box) will convert the digital signal so that it can be connected to any TV (new or old).

The only situation where you will need to replace your old TV, is for receiving hi-definition (HD) TV signals. HD TV signals are supplied through HDMI connections, so the TV must have an HDMI connection.

Some TVs have Digital receivers built into them and hence may be called a "Digital TV". This just means that the set-top-box is built into the TV and the TV can be connected directly to the digital signal supplier (digital cable or digital satellite, etc.)

  2. A TV signal is digital if the station sends each frame as 0's and 1's (instead of analog waveforms).

Most digital TV signals are transmitted as MPEG compressed signals.

Satellite TV transmission is indeed digital.
