What makes hotcakes commercially appealing?

If you're familiar w/ the saying "selling like hotcakes," I'm having trouble understanding the story behind it. 4 me, the only "hotcakes" that exist are those bland pancakes from McDonald's.

I think that is the American version of Pancakes.The idea is that they are hot, but considering they are called Pancakes shouldnt it be "selling like pancakes" .Not sure if McDonalds renamed them or if its an Americanism.
