  1. fruits are the product of a flowering plant to produce seeds. some plants do not have fruit, but only seeds. we only eat the leaves of lettuce, so it is classified as a vegetable. there are different parts of plants that can be classified differently though. for example, the leaves of a plant may be able to be eaten as well as the fruit, roots, seeds, or stalk produced by the plant.

  2. it does not taste like a fruit

  3. To be a fruit, we have to eat the reproductive organs of that particular plant. Leaves are obviously not the reproductive organ in the lettuce plant, so we categorize lettuce as a vegetable.

However, oranges ARE a fruit because the thing that is now the orange used to be the ovary which is now fertilized and has seeds.

  4. The answerer above me is kinda right.

We dont eat the reproductive organs: in plants, these are the stamens in flowers.

What classifies it as a fruit is that it contains the seed. Eg a plum contains the stone which you plant and grows to a plum tree.

You can't plant a lettuce and get a lettuce, lettuce is just leaf. So its a veggie.
