  2. I like helping people and meeting new people interested in the same things as me.

  3. My husband and I signed up to do volunteer work because we felt like we could meet nice people doing that. Also, it is good to help others to "get over yourself".  It is humbling to help people who have no money, or no home.  It makes us thankful for what we have.  We volunteer for Habitat for Humanity.  You can learn alot about fixing a home, and taking care of a home, from other people at the job sites.

  4. Self improvement, assisting people who are not as well off as you, becoming part of a team, meeting new friends and acquaintances, gives you constructive something to do with your spare time, returning something to the community that you live in

  5. court

  6. I have a lot of health problems which often makes me depressed.  A friend suggested helping someone else as therapy for me and it works wonders.  I feel like a contributing member of humankind, and helping others takes the focus off my troubles.

  7. 1) Potential job skills. In my area, Hospice will train you to do medical records. You can then take what you learned and apply at the local hospital for a $9 hour job. It's not high paying, but decent for a college student. There are other examples of this also.

    2) Being "voluntold". My husband was really against volunteering before he met me because of this. In high school this was required to graduate. He was also forced to do this several times by being in the Air Force. I'm totally against school requiring students to volunteer. If anything, they should create an incentive program so kids will want to do it. Kind of like the read for pizza program I had in elementary school.

    3) Court ordered community service.

    4) Wanting to give back to the community. It feels great to know that you're not being a drain on society, but are helping to better your community.

At the moment, my husband and I are volunteering for reasons 1 and 4. This is what we do:

    1) Volunteer at Hospice.

    2) Donate what we don't want to Goodwill.

    3) Donate blood to the American Red Cross. I'm also considering putting myself on the National Bone Marrow Registry.

    4) Recycle. (We don't recycle everything as we just started. We only do bottles/cans)
