What makes smart cars so smart in the united states?

there are much cheaper cars that have good gas mileage and more space than a smart car. i dont' see the sense in it excpet wanting to pay more for less.

it's kind of ridiculous actaully.  kind of like a prius.  paying a premium for fuel economy that you'll never get back b/c other cars get close enough and cost thousands less.

It is the general thought that the smaller the car the better the gas mileage.  This is not true, there are reports of the cheapest cars to buy, maintain and gas up and the smart was nowhere on the list of cheap enough.  The cheapest I believe was the Chevy Aveo or Scion Xa.  Smaller is not always better but remember you could always throw a turbo hyabusa motor in that Smart and have a pocket rocket.

Theoretically since they subdivision of mercedes benz quality should be higher, but they really suck visually IMHO.
