What makes the Washington DC metropolitan area unique from other metropolitan areas?

Washington D.C. is unique for it has grown so large that it is part of a megalopolis which means according to wikipedia.org "as an extensive metropolitan area or a long chain of roughly continuous metropolitan areas." This particular megalopolis is known as "BosWash" which includes these metropolitan areas: Boston,Providence,New York City,Philadelphia,Baltimore,Washington D.C. This accounts for 55 million people in this large area!!!!!! I have heard that it is so huge that it doesn't seem like you have let the "city" because it just turns into another metropolitan area after the other. That is what I think is unique about Washington D.C. Also another unique characteristic is that it is our National Capital of the U.S.A.
