  1. When the moon is on the horizon you are looking at it through a greater amount of atmosphere which is made up of water particles.  Just like when you look through a glass of water or a water droplet, things look magnified...so does the moon when you look through a greater amount of atmosphere.

That is also the reason that space looks so dark and the sun does not light up the entire sky when space ships leave the atmosphere of Earth, there's nothing to magnify the sun.

  2. The Sun gives out all wavelengths of light. Longer wavelengths (orange and red) are more able to refract, so when the Sun is on the other side of the Earth, as it is during a full moon, red light is more able to get to the Moon since the other wavelengths of light are blocked by the Earth as they do not refract as much.

And as for big... a common misconception is that it's because the Moon is closer to the Earth. This isn't the case; the Moon is roughly the same distance to the Earth all the time. The Moon often seems to be bigger simply because of refraction in the atmosphere.

  3. The moon's actual color and distance doesn't change over a period of  the moon rising. The moon becoming orange and looking larger is a result of light scrambling due to the horizon. A certain amount of light is scattered when you look straight up, but the the horizon is thicker because of the curvature of the Earth. This is also the reason why the sun appears orange and large when it rises.

When it is heavily polluted, the light is scrambled even more. You know how when there is a fire, the sun appears orange, and larger? That's because of the light being scrambled by the thick smog. The same thing happens with the moon.

Just to clarify something, when I say the distance from the Earth to the moon doesn't change, I mean to say it doesn't change enough for it to appear closer. The moon has a fairly elliptical orbit around the Earth which means it orbits in a oval instead of a perfect circle. The difference is so little that we don't notice it at all.

  4. magic

  5. it has something to do with where it is located, because it is much bigger when it is lower in your perspective.

  6. As far as what makes it big, God did.  Actually, it's not nearly as big as Earth.  It might look orange because of the sun's reflection.

  7. the moon moves.the bigger it is,the closer it is to earth.the orange color means the sun is right behind it

  8. Sunsets from all over the earth reflecting off the moons surface.
