  1. A valuable fighter is the one who actually steps into the cage.  Whether he wins or losses he has chosen to have the "drive and determination" to push forward and seek his goals in life.  So if a man is standing in the cage with you then you're on a equal playing field.  Two fighters determined to win, but one will face a loss any way you cut it.  There is nothing predictable about an opponent ever man....I mean ever.  You can size a man up all you want and some times your thoughts as to what technique to use will be dead on and sometimes not.  I'd say assess your own skills, heart rate, breathing and technique while standing there toe to toe with your opponent.  As far as applying technique goes the only good advice is to let your opponent make his own mistakes and then take full advantage of them.  This even holds true in a "street fight".  The best way to fight is to let your opponent fight himself with major mistakes.  Waiting for a oppotune time to lock in a joint locking technique or a take down or a strike is the key.  Giving way when you must and attacking when the moment is perfectly right.  A "valuble fighter" though is no different than your self always remember that.  You train and he trains for the exact same result.  Two fighters that face one another in/on a ring, cage, mat or the streets ( if trained ) are both valuable not because they choose to fight, but because they've both chosen a life stlye that teaches "drive and determination" in all that they do in life.  As far as the little key things go such as when an opponent will throw a punch or a kick keep his facial expressions in you memory as your standing their fighting him, little jerks in his shoulders and other mannerisms will give him away as far as when he's ready to make certain moves.  Part of sizing him up is understanding what mannerisms he'll show before he attempts a punch or kick during a fight.  9 times out of 10 most opponents will forget little things in their own technique and end up making mistakes that they don't realize they're making like dropping their hand when throwing a thigh kick or slowly dropping their hands lower and lower as the fight goes on, etc.  As far a "street fight" goes though all I ever see is a bunch of non-skilled little idiots throwing wild punches or some dude throwing the same hand over and over so there's really no science to a loud mouth street fighter's fighting style.  I've heard dudes talk big games even in my own neighborhood ( loud mouth street fighters ) and when the time comes to put up they fight like some uncoordinated idiot.  Every loud mouth street fighter thinks he's the "shiznit" and always talks and talks and talks about what he's going to do to this one or that one, but in all truth there's just trained, quiet and down to earth or there's untrained loud mouth and idiotic.  So if you're personally training I wouldn't worry for one second about handling your self on the streets man.  A "trained individual" will always know what he can do and never talk about it while "big bad a** loud mouth punks just talk and talk about what they can do and they don't know jack sh*t about fighting other than throwing sloppy punches and trying their best to win using brute force.  The common loud mouth punk can't be counted as a "valuable fighter" because he has no "drive or determination" in any thing other than looking like a bad a**.
