What makes you feel connected to a retail store? Coupons, customer service, something else?

I'm working on a project to understand what makes a consumer develop loyalty to a specific retailer. Any examples of promotions or similar that you have experienced in the past would be helpful!

My connect as far as continued loyalty always rests on the owner/manager--they have to be "good" folks...they are also reflected thru their employees--I enjoy shopping around people who are consistently happy to be there, & consistently there period--shows solid business ethics.

Of course, what gets me into a place to begin with???  A fabulous "SALE" sign will definitely get my attention...then I look at the "dressing" of the shop--the window displays, the outside offerings (if available)...if still attracted, I'll go in & explore--all the while watching the employee's interactions with other customers, and each other...I look in nooks & crannies for "super specials", comparing quality & pricing, as well as sources (which country my consumerism is supporting).  If I like what I see, I return as much as possible to provide my support, and will always tell my friends of my discovery--they know I don't refer without good cause, so my personal support of a local biz usually comes with a following.

Coupons usually end up torn to shreds before I even remember that I have them in my 'monster bag', or the opportunity to shop doesn't always coincide with the expire dates, or they get left on my table, even if enroute to the store...of little use to me, personally.

I like feeling "special" to a local shop, because I do know that my support is important...things like a special 'midnight madness' sale for regular customers, who can bring friends...coffee/tea & cookies are always nice, esp. around holidays, if they bag my buys in nicer ways, like with handled paper bags with tissue--the shop name & info on one or the other, they get passed around more because I'll reuse them to bring gifts or treats to little personal gatherings--more advertising!!!
