What makes your home feel like a home?

I am helping a friend design her funky little furniture store and she wants it to feel like you were in your own home when you shop there. Can you suggest anything she could do to create this homely atmosphere? Thanks

As your friend does not know what people like or dislike in their homes I would suggest she cater for people from all walks of life. You cannot set up a room and expect everyone to feel at home as people have different tastes.

my rooms REALLY messy, but i think this just makes it cosy

lots of cushions and fabrics are nice and homely, also plants and animals give it a good feel. if her stuff is quite funky it might be cool to get a parrot/bird or even a cat or any other animal, animals make everywhere seem comfortable and laid back :)

Carpets and curtains. Coffee brewing with the aroma of coffee filling the room.

LCD tv hi fi PC all connected thru surround sound with a 3+2 mocha leather suite.

toys thrown everywhere, sulky teenager stomping up the stairs and slamming doors. my kitchen, ahh big windows looking out over my garden with wine rack and glasses right next to my chair.

warm paint colors, soft cushions on the chairs, cozy sitting areas, floral arrangements

I would arrange everything like you would see in one's home: a saucer with a cup on it here, a pile of books on that expesive nightstand there...a throw slung over the sofa - a wet dog on the bed.  Get me?

Candles, photos, books, trinkets from travels, cd collection, handbag, shoes by the door...
