i have been learning wing chun and other systems of kung fu from a supremely skilled man named jack sylvester. hes been doing this stuff for seventeen years and he is very fast and skilled. he told me i need to look at another style to bring something new to the table in sparring and because he doesnt want me to be a carbon copy of himself.i have no clue what system or style that would be. he suggested grappling.. the problem is (and no offense to any martial art styles) i dont see anything that can do well against his wing chun and speed in sparring and especially in a fight. as you can see im a little confused lol and help would be greatly appreciated. and i cant handle those simple answers like mma or bjj or muay thai. if thats your answer please tell me why because i just dont see those things working against the stuff this guy does.

  1. Firstly I'm a fan of wing chun and would love to study it properly but sadly its too expensive in my area.

I don't know your sifu but don't confuse his speed as making him unbeatable as most styles have brilliant instructors that can have they're students believe the same.

I'd suggest Japanese Jiu-jitsu or judo if you want to investigate grappling

As to your sentence: i cant handle those simple answers like mma or bjj or muay thai. if thats your answer please tell me why because i just don't see those things working against the stuff this guy does.

Answer: speed, strength, technique and endurance are major factors in any fight situation but the dominant factor is mental toughness and the determination to survive regardless should never be underestimated, and I speak from experience from real life situations involving, weapons, and multiple attackers.

Please don't take this as boasting as I speak from personal experience.

    Best wishes :)***

  2. why dont you try aikido as a grappling form? Or maybe jujutsu?

remember "the usefulness of a cup is its emptiness" (Lao Tzu). dont be too skeptical- maintain an open approach to blending your forms.

  3. Start learning Tai Chi. If your Sifu is the real deal; all martial artist masters think highly of Tai Chi. It has everything hidden in the forms. Its advanced! I'm a Wing Chun practitioner, not sure what your Sifu wants; but Wing Chun is the real deal! I can't tell you why, you have to understand it yourself, its the internal aspects of martial arts. Remember martial arts is not about being able to hurt someone (that's an easy part; just buy a gun), its about understanding your body & mind. You body & mind works in sync. And Wing Chun is not about speed...
