  1. bjj and muay thai

  2. MMA fighters generally cross-train in three elements: striking, throws, and ground-fighting.  The more common striking styles used by North American fighters are boxing, kickboxing,  muay thai, and various styles of karate.  Different wrestling styles (Greco-Roman, Folk, Freestyle) and BJJ  cover the throws, takedowns, and ground-fighting.

Not to get off topic but what exactly constitutes a "traditional" martial art?  Isn't that just a euphemism for "asian".

How are boxing and wrestling not traditional martial arts when they've been around since Ancient Greece.  Because they don't use a colored belt system?  Because they don't break boards and expound philosophy?

  3. MMA (mixed martial arts)

There are no set grouping of styles in which MMA fighters train. But there are certain trends.

Boxing, kickboxing, mauy thai, BJJ are the most common among MMA fighters.

  4. My own system teaches MMA through a series of event levels.  Starting out with boxing and its stance, its footwork and combination punching.  Once that level has been met by the practitioner he moves onto takedowns from judo's stand point and will work on that aspect until it is met and my entire team is confident that the practioner can utilize the techniques of that particual art form from the stand up stand stand point.  The practitioner will then move onto Pinning Techniques (Osaewaza), Choking Techniques (Shimewaza) and Joint Locking Techniques (Kansetsuwaza) from the ground work aspect of jujitsu and judo ( not high school or collegic wrestling ).  After the practitioner has met a satiisfactory level in that aspect of MMA he will then move onto Muay Thai and techniques such as Yaang Sam Kun ( The three-step walk ), muay thai clinching, knee strikes and the muay thai philosophy of "Kick loses to punch, punch loses to knee, knee loses to elbow, elbow loses to kick" and after this aspect has been met by the pratitioner he will then move onto to our own in-depth belt ranking system within the American Combat System where he will begin to look at every aspect of each "finite detail" in the scope of the do's and don't's in the cage.  It would take a book's worth of writing to lay out a MMA pratitioner's daily routine including "core wrok" during weight training, drills, dietary needs, etc. The best thing for a pratitioner to have at his disposal is a memeory full of techniques and the calmness and prfessionalism enough to know when to use them.  Decisions like which punch works best from a scientific sense? a Karate punch technique or boxing technique?  Practitioner's will have their own sense of what works best for them in the cage, but it is the coach's/trainer's job to make sure that they have many weapons to chose from and the understanding of when and how to use them in the cage.

MMA means Mixed Martial Arts which is exactly what a good practitioner does, he uses "Mixed" techniques chosing from every art he has knowledge of in order to be victorious during competition.

  5. MMA now is primarily a mix of a striking art (Boxing, Kickboxing) and a grappling art (wrestling, submission wrestling, BJJ) Now than MMA is begining to come full circle, practitioners with a more traditional martial arts base are starting to find success (Cung Le, Lyoto Machida, GSP)

  6. 5 animal kung fu ,,seriously

  7. Like the others said, there are no set or mandatory system that MMA fighters practice. If yuo go to fightfinder.com, you will see people who have tai chi, aikido, kickboxing, shaolin, ninjitsu, and alot of others listed as their chosen discipline(s).  THe most common styles for MMA oriented schools are Muay thai,boxing,greco-roman wrestling, judo, and brazilian jujitsu. These make up the bulk of most MMA schools. But, people are starting to get more open minded about traditional arts again, so hopefully we will see more obscure and interesting fighters.

  8. Any that works, hence the name MMA.

The most common ones are: boxing, muay thai, wrestling, and Brazilian jujitsu.
