  1. Any metallic material can undergo heat treatment, the degree to which each is affected is dependent upon its hardenability. The degree to which a metallic material will respond to heat treatment is called its hardenability. Metallic materials such as carbon steel respond to heat treatment very well. The higher the carbon content in the steel, the better the steel will respond to heat treatment, but only to a certain extent.

To read more about it...I guess you could try wikipedia. Or buy a cheap older edition of a metallic materials science textbook off amazon.com.

  2. u can go 4 hchcr, ohns, hss and various type of tool steels (refer astme data) ..

depends on ur purpose various tool steels are available

der r diff std like din,is,bs,wnr, jis.en series etc

(refer assab, uddeholm mfg of special steels)

    and different types of hardening

1-oil.air ,ash (classification depnds on cooling media)

    quenching means- sudden cooling only

annealing not a hardenning process it soften d matl...

and case hardening means only on the surface of work hardening take place...(up to 0.8mm) applicable in bearing, coupler etc...

ntriding carburising flame hardening, syniding etc are different types of c.h process
