  1. The most famous biblical chapter on love is from 1 Corinthians:

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13:1-13)

  3. There are different types of love - 1) the love for parents and family.

    2) romantic love for your partner (it's different than lust)

    3) the love of God for mankind that we can also have to other people.

  4. To know! The physical body grows old in time, so if you have a physical love, it will wax old and then die! It means to know the heart and mind, this is a love that lasts!

  5. Love is basically altruism:

  6. Love is a hormonal reaction in the brain.  It evolved to give offspring a better chance of surviving on several levels, first that the parents continued care for the offspring, that the parents stayed together through pregnancy, and that there was a group around the parents to help survival.

I know this sound more clinical than other answers, but it's better to know the truth rather than cite poetic lauds of what people think love should be.

  7. The ultimate definition of Love is giving to others even at the expense of your own wellbeing without expecting any return.

Some words which have strong love connotations.

    Self-sacrifice.

    Serve/Service.

    Bless/Blessing.

    Uplift.

    Give.

    Forgive.

    Edify.

    Encourage.

    Trust.

    Hope.

    Care.

    I hope that helps.

  8. Infatuation is instant desire. It is one set of glands calling to another.

Love is a friendship that has caught fire. It takes root and grows, one day at a time.

Infatuation is marked by a feeling of insecurity. You are excited and eager, but not genuinely happy. There are nagging doubts, unanswered questions, little bits and places about your beloved that you would just as soon not examine too closely.

    It might spoil the dream.

Love is quiet understanding and the mature acceptance of imperfection. It is real. It gives you strength and grows beyond you to bolster your beloved. You are warmed by his/her presence even when he/she is away. Miles do not separate you. You want him/her nearer, but near or far, you know he/she is yours and you can wait.

Infatuation says, "We must get married right away! I can't risk losing you!"

Love says, "Be patient. Do not panic. Plan your future with confidence."

Infatuation has an element of sexual excitement. Whenever you are together, you hope it will end in intimacy.

Love is the maturation of friendship. You must be friends before you can be lovers.

Infatuation lacks confidence. When he/she is away you wonder if he/she is cheating. Sometimes you check.

Love means trust. You are calm, secure and unthreatened. Your beloved feels that also and that makes them even more trustworthy.

Infatuation might lead you to do things you will regret later, but love never will.

Love is elevating. It makes you look up. It makes you think up. It lifts you up.

It makes you a better person.
