I have to write a paper where you define a quality. The quality I would like to do is "knowing what you want from life." Is there an noun that means this? When you are sure of what you want and seizing it? Any help in the right direction would be appreciated.

  1. Define What You Want

"To know yourself is the first and most important step to pursuing your dreams and goals." – Stedman Graham

Defining what you want is the critical first step in almost any situation. "You can have anything you really want but you cannot have everything you want."

  2. perserverance

  3. Ambition sums it up in one word.

  4. I would call this "targeting," personally.  The Random House Thesaurus provides the following synonyms for "target": objective, object, goal, aim, end, purpose, ambition, design, plan, intent, intention, and mark.  If you'd prefer a phrase, "goal-directed behavior" is often used.  "Ambition" is often used also, but tends to have negative connotations sometimes, as ambitious people often run roughshod over anyone who gets in their way.  The other synonyms strike me as a bit too vague.  But this is your project, so take your pick.  In writing a paper, it is good to vary the words and phrases you use to describe the quality you are describing (as a teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages, or TESOL), this is what I tell my students, so use one of these at the beginning of your paper, and use the others as you go along.  A single noun is not really necessary.
