  1. main duty to look after passengers safety advise on on  board questions. check tickets take fares as required  some lines they are called conductor guards they take most of the fares on that line as the line has unmanned stops..

  2. Basic summary:

A guard is responsible for the safety of the train and usually has a purpose-built compartment complete with controls for the brake and communication with the driver and the passengers.

It is the guard's duty to see that the doors are properly closed and the train is safe to depart, and signal 'right away' i.e. clear to depart, to the driver. On UK trains this is normally given by a bell or buzzer with 2 beats to signal 'right away' followed by the driver repeating the signal to acknowledge. The guard is responsible for seeing that the train runs punctually. If there is a delay the guard must account for it.

Green flags or lamps may also be used and the guard may also signal with a whistle.

The guard also checks passengers' tickets, ensures that luggage is safely stowed, that the train brakes and couplings are in good order and in the event of the train breaking down or becoming derailed has to place detonators (small explosive charges) on the rails behind and ahead of the stricken train to warn oncoming trains of the danger.

The guard along with the driver is responsible for filing a report of safe completion of the journey or in the event of mishap, an accurate account of what went wrong.

The guard should also be able to administer first aid in the case of passengers who are sick or injured and provide assistance for passengers who need it e.g. wheelchair users.

The guard should be aware of any special working conditions e.g. speed restrictions, diversions, emergency single line working, etc. how they affect the working of the train and liaise with driver and signalling department to ensure smooth operation.

The guard must be aware of the procedures for operating in bad weather conditions and ensure that communication with the driver and signalling department is as efficient as possible.
