If you want critters to stay out of your garbage put it in garbage cans with led on them.

Cayenne  pepper spread in the garden will keep critters out.  Some say to use moth balls too.

Pour beer in a pan and it will control slugs from eating your plants.

Spray you grass with an insecticide for Japanesee Beetle grubs instead of setting out beetle traps.  You have to kill the grub of the beetle. it's to late after the beetles hatch.  The Japanes Beetle traps start to stink too because of foul odor of death.  .

Pests require three things to exist. Food, Harbourage and Mating. Whilst you may not be able to prevent the latter you can certainly rdeuce risks in the initial areas.

Keep things clean and tidy at all times. Ensure that areas are in good repair so as not to give easy access. If you still get pests then you can put it down to bad luck rather than anything else.
