Vicodin (hydrocodone) is an opiod with significant CNS depressant effects. Unfortunately, that's because almost all opiods, as a class of drugs, all cause CNS depression.

The great thing about opiods is that they reduce pain by fooling our brains into thinking there isn't any pain. There are other medications that relieve pain in different ways, because they work in different pain pathways.

For example, ibuprofen actually helps reduce pain signals in the tissue itself. In higher doses, it can prevent inflammation, which reduces pain in some inflammatory causes.

Unfortunately, without knowing what you're taking the Vicodin for, it's hard to make an alternative suggestion. Though, to be honest, Vicodin is often prescribed for pain that can be controlled with NSAIDs like ibuprofen (assuming you don't have any stomach bleeding problems).

Best talk to your doctor about you pain issues and problems with side effects (drowsiness, nausea, etc.) They will try to work with you.
