What memory cards do Japanese Playstation 2 consoles require?

Are US memory cards compatible with Japanese PS2's, are asia memory cards compatiible? I read that new JPS2's don't even need memory cards. Is this true? I need help quick.

Memory cards are universal. It doesn't matter where they are from or where you get them, a memory card from one country works in them all. Every version of the PS2 needs memory cards.

You should be able to use US memory cards on the Japanese PS2.

Haven't heard anything about Japanese PS2 not needing memory cards, but I guess it's possible since the PS2 does have the hard drive option, even though not too many games uses it.

Any memory card will work, but I know for at least some systems (not sure if PS2 is one of them) each region uses a different system format. So you wouldn't be able to use the same memory card for a North American game and for a Japanese game at the same time.
