  1. until you get to more than an inch thick steel, nothing is bulletproof. You can always get a bigger bullet.

One not so large bullet has a "penetration power of almost 20mm of plain steel at a range of 550 yards." that's almost an inch. And there are heavier bullets.

  2. Lead is a great one.  Even a thin layer will stop any bullet, and it's easy to come by.  But it's heavy.  Tin and aluminum are easy to come by, but you'll need a little thicker shield, but they don't weigh so much.  Gold is good too, but it's expensive.

  3. Steel is bullet proof if it is thick enough

  4. Never mind metal - use woven Kevlar matting.

  5. Practically anything is bulletproof if it is thick enough. The trick is dissipating the bullet's energy quickly without damaging the material too much.

Metals are actually not a good material for this, because they do not deform much before reaching their elastic limit.

This is why bulletproof vests are typically made of fibrous composites, like kevlar. The weave of kevlar makes it very tough while still allowing it to bend. In other words, the fibres tend to reinforce each other.

In terms of metals, you could always try titanium :)
