  1. ferrous metals are most directly affected by magnets

    these are iron nickel and cobalt

    they can also become magnetic

    there are other materials that are paramagnetic which are slightly attracted to magnets

    these cannot be magetic themselves

    such as aluminum

    almost all materials exhibit at least one of these forms of magnetism if only at very slightly


  2. In general, iron, nickel, and cobalt are ferromagnetic (the kind of magnetism everyone thinks of).  These three pure elements are certainly ferromagnetic.

    However, there are alloys containing any or all of these metals which are not ferromagnetic.  For example, stainless steel is mostly iron, but it is not ferromagnetic.
