I'm putting up a hi-tensile fence and need to know what all I will need. I will use all wooden posts and I want it to be 3 wires. I want the top and the bottom wires to be electrified. I think there is around 750ft-ish of ground that I want fenced. So a list of what i need and a price estimite would be great! also, how much usually ghets charged for installation? Thanks everyone!!

  1. If you are getting this fence installed the people who are installing the fence will know what they need and how to put it up.  If you are asking the price to have an idea of what you will be forking out...go to your local Tractor Supply Store, or Co-op, or where ever you get your fencing supplies and get their prices.  None of us are from the same country let alone same town, so it would be hard to give you a price not even knowing where you are from..

  2. Are you referring to New Zealand Wire???

  3. Firstly what do you mean by hi-tensile, do you mean in strength terms or tensity (how tight it is?)

    And where are you?

  4. For high tensile fence, in general you will need:

    The wire

    The posts

    Tools for setting the posts

Fence staples for attaching the wire to the posts.

Insulating sleeves for where the wire is attached to the posts (this comes in a roll and you cut it to size)

Ratchets for tightening the wire and keeping it tight

A ratchet tool for tightening the ratchets

Splices and a splicer for connections

Bracing rails for the corners and gateposts

    A gate.

    A good fence charger

Good insulated wire connecting the charger to the fence (if the charger's in your barn, make sure you get the wire made for this purpose!  Don't want to burn it down)

A grounding rod, wire, and connectors

A lightening arrestor in case it gets hit by lightening

Hammer, wire cutters, pliers, a wire puller, etc.

I would recommend more wires.  It doesn't cost a lot more for the wires, and makes it less likely the horse will get caught up in it.  At least 5, with 3 electrified.

ALWAYS keep it electrified; you want the horses to know it's dangerous so they'll keep away from it.  They probably won't be able to get through it if it's not electrified, but unfortunately if there's something interesting onthe other side (like another horse) they're very apt to put a foot through and can get some nasty injuries if it doesn't come back through smoothly.  You also don't want them to graze over the top of it - stretches the wires (they can even break) and makes the posts bend.

The cost will depend primarily on the posts you select.  I use creosoted 6" round posts; they last the best.  Every 10-12' is plenty for high tensile.

If your land is wooded, rocky, hilly, or has streams or other obstacles installation will be more.

You'll usually call a fence contractor to come out and look at the job and give you an estimate.  He'll supply all the materials and do the work.
