Too many trips to the beach and ice cream parlor are taking a toll on my car's interior. I would like to clean it myself but would like to know what I need to do a thorough cleaning the way the pros do it.

 1. I detail cars on a part time job basis for added income(15 years experience) and I have tried all sorts of cleaners, soaps, etc.. I actually use simple powder laundry detergent(your favorite scent & brand). The key is to not over saturate the upholstery & carpeting with water & soap. Used a good upholstery brush(hand sized one) and use a micro-fiber towel to immediately dry the area as you scrub. For very stubborn stains I use Resolve, but test first, because it's very caustic and could stain/damage certain types of cloth upholstery. For door panels and vinyl/plastic trim I use Simple Green(diluted to suit job) and a soft brush. Never get your headliner wet(it'll stain and also cause the adhesive that holds headliner in place to loosen), simply brush with a dry upholstery brush and use Simple Green(sparingly) on a micro-fiber towel to get rid of any little stains. Any window cleaning agent(Windex) will get your windows clean, but soap & water work well too.

 2. It depends on what fabric your car has. The best place to start is hot soapy water and a towel. this will clean any plastic surfaces as well as the carpet. Have a good shop vac with small attachments to get into small crevices. For vinyl or leather surfaces, use a vinyl cleaner. This will also remove oils off of plastic. Clean the inside of glass with any good glass cleaner and news paper. Wash the outside of glass with soap and water, dry, and apply Rain X.
