    I think a one or two syllable name sounds best, a hard sounding name (with d or t or k sounds)  I am definitely for family names as middle names.  Try looking back a few genereations if you can... there can be some real treasures in old family names.

    Since Patrick is already like another first name, I would even say you could consider using a last name as a middle name, like Hunt or Turner or Taylor.
