Half of the evidence that archaeologists are interested in is contained in the context clues.  By studying the soil stratigraphy and in situ clues surrounding remains age, climate conditions, diet, tool use, class heirarchy, religious practices etc. can be theorized. That is why looting does such damage to the archaeological record!!
