I am working with a plywood subfloor. If your home improvement store does not have many options available for underlayment in stock, can you put 2 layers of thinner (1mm) underlayment to improve noise reduction and insulation? Also, is it better to buy flooring with underlayment attached or is buying quality underlayment just as effective?

  1. 3 to 5 mil thickness is recomended

  2. the thicker the mill the better it will be with sound barrier and moisture from sub floor i wouldn't recommend doubling the underpayment there is also a foam underlayment and a rubber type and also a fabric type underlayment made by silent step and quite walk out of choose i would go with the rubber compound or the cloth type just make sure u tape ur seams personally if i was laying laminate in my house i would use a cork underlayment and lay plastic underneath the cork for the moisture barrier u can find some of thoose products on online floor suppliers ifloor.com is resionable

  3. it will say on the box what you should use. you can buy laminate with the underlayment attached already. used it in my

    kitchen, worked great.
