  1. Here is a website where he can find information about autism. http://childbrain.com/pdd.shtml Here is a link to an assessment scale to see if the child may fall within the autism spectrum. http://childbrain.com/pddq6.shtml Not a replacement for a visit to the doctor of course but it's a place to start. All kids are different but the child's lack of eye contact and loss of speech are red flags so he has reason to be concerned. I think he should make an appointment with his pediatrician because if there is a problem it's always best to intervene as early as possible. It may also just be a feisty two year old. Best of luck! =]

  2. There are many signs of autism that are also a part of normal childhood development.  Autism is very tough to diagnose but there are 5 signs that Dr's typically look for.  Does your baby respond to his name when you call him?  Does he show you objects or try to look at what you look at, meaning does he follow your gaze?  Does he imitate?  Does he wave when you wave, say what you say, make the same faces you do?  Does he have emotional responses?  Does he emulate the feelings of others or does he react with the appropriate emotions?  And one of the biggest things that Dr's look for is does your son pretend?  Does he have imagination and the ability to pretend?   Right now Dr's are really under pressure to get autism diagnoses right.  In the past few years there has been a huge spike in diagnoses of autism, and now Dr's are being much more careful in their evaluations.  The big thing is that if you suspect that this may be autism, you should really have your son evaluated.  The earlier there is intervention the better the success rate for normal adult function.  Keep in mind that even if it is not autism, there are other mental disorders that can present similar symptoms such as Aspereger's syndrome.  The earlier that you can begin things like speech and occupational therapy, the better.  Good Luck.

  3. Some kids are slower then others. My son was about 26 months when he began talking yet he did say my name and dadda in the past. She should worry yet.

But go here, its a list of milestones, but please reassure your friend that each child is different!
