I don't think anyone would dispute that trains are much more comfortable than buses, but you rarely get to choose one over the other.

In Mexico, some of the buses are so luxurious (with only 25 first class seats) that they compete with trains (or even planes) for trips of about 200 miles.

well i didn't drive until i was 24, so i have a lot of public transportation knowledge.  for me it depends on the destination.   shorter trips, the bus isn't bad (like to and from work, store, etc).  but greyhound for long trips sucks!  i grew up in chicago, so as far as trains, i don't really like the metra system.  but amtrak is incredibly comfy for long rides.  if it's a ride longer than 20 minutes but less than an hour, i'd take the metra simply because people on the bus will get on your nerves after just 20 minutes!

Train. The best thing about it, besides the speed, is that it generally doesn't have to compete with other modes of transport so you can get where you need to go.
