What more can I do to secure my apartment?

I live in an apartment...

The only windows are several sliding doors, which have lock bars and are inaccessible except via a private balcony

The front door is my main concern...

It only has a deadbolt... that's it

What more can I do to secure my front door from burglars etc. ?

GET AN ALARM,USE TITAN LOCKS(KWIKSET) THEY ARE VERY VERY HARD TO GAET INTO ALSO RUN 3 IN. SCREWS IN THE DOOR JAM THAT WILL STOP EVEN A BIG BOOT FROM KICKING IT OPEN.ALSO USE THE SAME SCREWS ON ALL THE HINGES.

Take an aproved pistol shooting corse,go to the range and practice and get a concealed carry permit or move into a bank vault

Yes, use a higher quality deadbolt and have it installed with 3 inch screws. The screws will go through the door jamb and into the the frame of the wall. This advice was in a very old issue of consumer reports. Make sure the person who installs it doesnt get lazy and use smaller screws.

you can place a chair under the k**b when home at a tilt or a door stop in direction to stop it if it swung open.

You can buy a alarm for your door they are cheap but you will now if someone tries to break in at night and you can build a door that is hard to get into

they make a bar that hooks under the door k**b and on the floor. The angle makes them hard to push open. If you can, a second dead bolt or a floor mounted wedge are also some possabilities

Ask your Landlord if He/She can also put in an extra deadbolt or a locking doorknob. If not you can buy various types of door alarms at your local Home depot or other type stores. Good Luck

As far as you being gone, their isn't much you can do. Your front door is only as safe as your frame construction. A determined burglar will get in. For when your home, you can install a drop bar across the door. However, my previous statement applies. It is only as strong as your door frame construction.
