Question:

What motorcycle(s) am I entitled to ride?

I am over 21 with a full driving licence obtained before 1st Feb 2001. It states on my driving license under provisional entitlements that I have category A.

I have never taken a motorcycle test but wondered if I am able to ride a Motorcycle over 125cc after 2 years riding as that is what it states on the DVLA website.

I am confused about what I can and cannot ride and if I need L plates or not.

Any suggestions?

  1. Depends where you live, you do not have to do the cbt test if you live in N Ireland

  2. As you passed your car test before 1 February 2001 you can ride a 50cc moped with a pillion passenger (if you wish) and you don't need to display L plates. Mopeds are not allowed on motorways. Although you don't need a CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) it is recommended.

If you want to ride anything between 50cc - 125cc you will need a CBT. You will also need to display L plates and you cannot carry passengers or go on motorways.

CBTs last for two years, if you haven't obtained your full motorcycle licence before it expires you must take another CBT to continue riding.

To ride anything between 50cc and 125cc with a passenger, on a motorway and without L plates, you will need to do your motorcycle theory and practical tests.

You cannot ride any bike over 125cc unless you have a full bike licence.

Personally I think 50cc mopeds are dangerous due to the lack of power (even more so if carrying a passenger). You will have cars trying to overtake you all the time and it's hard to get yourself out of a sticky situation. I would recommend at least a 125cc motorcycle/scooter.

Whatever you decide to do, ENJOY ;)

  3. Yes, you must do a CBT test before riding a motorbike - you can then ride a 125 with L plates for up to two years until your CBT entitlement expires, or until you take a part two test.

  4. You can also ride a 50cc or less (moped) with no L plates as long as you you passed a car test before September 2001.

If you passed your car test after that date you will have to take a CBT but you can still ride a moped.

The DVLA site is quite good too.

  5. you can drive a 125 but still must do the cbt test...

  6. If you don't have a full motorcycle licence then you can at 21 and after a CBT ride a 125 with 'L' plates.

If you want to take the bike test as you are 21 then I would suggest doing the DAS this will allow you to ride any motorcycle as soon as you pass your test.
