I have heard that there are mountain bikes that are good for all terrains but perform better on smooth surfaces also. Can anyone recommend a bike that is like this and isn't overly expensive. I was thinking about getting a Columbia trail head Mt bike. Any other suggestions?

  1. Any mountain bike can be converted by putting on slicker, less wide tires.  Simple.

  2. You may want to look at a comfort/path style bike.  Knobby tires are a pain on the road.

  3. It will perform well on flat surfaces especially if you can lock out the suspension. It won't be as good as a road bike on the road of course but if you are going to ride on the road to get to trails like me it'll be fine.

  4. Your looking at a high dollar cross country bike if you want it to be good, trek makes a big number of these, so does specialized
