I am looking for a list of Hollywood movies (like The Player) which take place inside the film business. Actually I am looking to know whether placing a movie inside the film world is the kiss of death I have often heard it is.

  1. Yes, it is the kiss of death. Audiences are just not that interested in movies set inside the film business.

Here is Box Office Mojo's list of the 400 top-grossing movies of all-time (which includes pretty much every movie that's ever sold at least $100 million worth of tickets in the US). There's only one movie on that list that's set in the film business; "Who Framed Roger Rabbit."

A list of movies about filmmakers from the last 50 years would be very long. Go to imdb and do a keyword search for "hollywood" or "film industry".

  2. There is a list of such movies on Wikipedia:

Here's a list of the best by Muray Horwitz, director and COO of American Film Institute Silver Theater and Cultural Center:

I've heard that such films are box office poison several times too, but if you look at the list you will see that not many films about film making have been made and you will also find that many gems are on that list, such as "Singin’ in the Rain", "A Star is Born", "Sunset Boulevard", "Sullivan’s Travels"...
