Hey I am planning on moving to Sydney in about a year and half and I just found the average minimum income is around $10 - $15 depending where. I want to know around how much would I pay in taxes? I would only be allowed to work 20 hours with the work visa so I'd make around $300 at the most.

  1. If you are entering Australia on a working holiday, then you are disfavored by an especially high rate of tax imposed by the Howard Government.

  2. Will your course of study be longer than 6 months? Foreigners on student visas are usually assessed at resident rates of tax on their income earned in Australia. Which means you probably won't be subject to the higher rates of tax for non-residents. On $300 per week, an employer would only be required to withhold $28 tax. Here's the calculator:

    http://www.ato.gov.au/scripts/taxcalc/ca...

If you're not sure about whether you'll be treated as a resident or non resident, just call the Australian Tax Office and they will explain it for you - 13 28 61

You'll need to apply for a tax file number before you start working here - see this:

    https://iar.ato.gov.au/iarweb/default.as...

If you don't provide a tax file number to an employer within 28 days of starting work they will be required to withhold 46.5% tax from your wages.

    Good luck :)
