I'm going into the diving team at my high school. Never done it before and I want to know which muscles I should train on my spare time, and also which ones the sport itself works out.

  1. mostly the latisa mos dorsi, misspelled.left and right back muscle behind armpit.lower then also.i know this because i work out.

  2. Shoulder muscles are very important, along with leg muscles.  You probably want to do some weight training under the supervision of your coach, although a lot of coaches don't emphasize this in high school.

You might be interested in the website USADiving.org.  If you decide you want to dive year round, look for a swim/dive club in your area.  There's a link for that at the website, or your coach would know about them.

Good luck.  And don't get discouraged if it seems as if your not making fast progress.  It takes a while to learn all the intricacies of diving, but it's a sport that's a lot of fun, both to do and to watch [although as a diver mom those inward dives always made me nervous!].

  3. Swimming and diving, whether indoors or out, involves nearly every muscle you have, that's why it's such good exercise!

  4. swimming works all muscles, but diving works your core a little more intensely because you twist and bend for different dives.
