  1. The muscles that cycling works in your legs are mainly the:

    Quadriceps

    And

    Your Hamstrings.

It doesn't work your ankles on the legs as they are not functioning whilst on the bike they are just moving around the pedals.

    Hope this Helped

  2. I rode a 10 speed quite a bit (20 miles a day) as a teenager. It works every muscle from your waist on down and it will keep your gut slim too.

The only other exercise I would recommend is swimming against a rough tide. Be careful.

  3. Quads, glutes, and hamstrings. I have heard it said that technically bicycling doesn't work your calves, but in practice your calves do a lot of work helping to keep your spin smooth and tensing on every pedal stroke, so in practice, they get a good workout too.

Bicycling also required core strength and some upper body, to support your body while you're riding. Sit-ups and push-ups are still good for that.

  4. It depends on what kind of riding you do. If you just roll along at 10 miles an hour, you'll get very little exercise. If you truly want to get a workout you'll need to up the intensity. If that's the case, the prime movers will be your quads, glutes, and to a lesser extent, your hamstrings. Calves do very little work for most cyclists but you'll likely see some benefit.
