Question:

What musical should my school do?

My mom is one of the directors, and the directors are trying to decide on the musical. It has to incorrporate kids grades 1-12. And everyone is always in the play, it doesn't matter if they want to or not, so we have to have a musical with a big cast. Musicals we have already considered are: Seussical, Annie, Wizard of Oz, and Bye Bye Birdie. Any other ideas?

  1. - Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat is good - you can have loads and loads of brothers, wives, Ishmaelites and Pharaoh's court.

    - Oliver! as you can have stacks of orphans, townspeople etc etc

    - Fiddler on the Roof Jnr - again, loads of townspeople and there are a good few lead roles

    - Pirates of Penzance (lots of pirates, policeman and you can have more sisters)

    - Wizard of Oz is always a good one - by the time you have Munchkins, Ozians, Winkies and Jitterbugs you can have a lot of cast members.  I'd recommend the RSC version over the MUNY version - it's much closer to the film and therefore more recognisable and familiar.  The MUNY version is closer to the book.

    - Oklahoma! calls for a big chorus and is not too difficult to stage

    - Meet Me In St Louis is not often performed but it's a lovely show with lots of parts including some great younger roles.

Hope one of those works out for you!

  2. I think Anie would be a good one but another one you could consider is A Midsummer Nights Dream. I did that play at school and we had a really big cast.

  3. Thoroughly Modern Millie !!

  4. I say Seussical.  My school did it this year, and it was so much fun.  It's definitely a musical where kids and teens of all ages can enjoy it.

  5. i think it should be a musical where the main character is older so the older kids have a chance to have principle roles because they payed their dues through school and they probably want to build their resume

so i think the wizard of oz would be best because the older kids could be the main characters (dorothy, glinda, oz, scarcrow, etc.) and the little kids could be munchins and toto!! and there are so many possibilities for a large and smaller cast for that musical so i definitly think that the wizard of oz is the best choice :)

    best of luck!! happy dreaming!!

  6. The King and I is a good one, because the king's children are from very small (perfect for Grades 1&2) to teens. The wives are older and there are a lot of them. The royalties shouldn't be horribly expensive since it is an older show. Another good choice is The Music Man, but only if you have a VERY strong male singer/actor to carry the show. Oliver is another big cast/various age show, we just did it in January and we had 24 orphans, 6 young pickpockets and a huge cast (over 40) of townspeople. It is a bit violent though, since Nancy gets beaten to death but you can do that offstage. Good luck with your search! If you go to the MTI website (Music Theater International, mtishows.com) they have a great tool for helping you find a musical. Just put in the specifics you need and they will choose shows that fit your needs.

    Break a leg!!!

  7. Well I did lots of acting lessons and musicals I say you should do Cats but if your school isn't in the dancing kind of stuff the do The King and I it has dancing for kids who are in dance and lots of singing and acting!
