I've been reading old census records in an attempt to research my family tree, and a male's name was abbreviated to "Jus." Does anyone know what that means? This was in the 1910 US Federal Census.

  1. It could be for Justin.

    I could not find any listing for a "Jus", but found these:

    Jas. = James

    Jas = James (with the "s" as a superscript above the "a")

    Jos. = Joseph

    Josh = Josiah (with the "h" as superscript above the "s")

    Then, there is "Jud." for  Judith

    ( I did not see Justin listed anywhere among that time frame. I think Justin  is of more modern usage than 1910, so I'd bet money on either the Jas or Jos listings.)

  3. Justin?  The way to figure it out is to find this person in the next or previous census and see what the name is.
