What nationality/ies do you think the name ivan comes from?

i know there are some italians named ivan & russian but how about portuguese or spainish does anyone know, thanks to who reply.

  1. Ivan is definately not Portuguese or Spanish. Russian or Eastern European is more likely


  2. Ivan is the Russian form of John just as Juan is the Spanish form of John and Giovanni is the Italian form of John.  Haven't you heard of the czar known as "Ivan the Terrible"?

  3. Ivan is the Russian version of John and thus related to Scottish Ian, Welsh Ioan, German Johann, etc. but I've known Russian, English and Canadian Ivans, Czech, Croatian, Canadian and English Ivanas. Ivanov / Ivanova is also quite a common surname in Russia.
