russia has lots of natural resources but the two that really count is oil and natural gas which they are the major supplier to eurpopean nations.   The europenas have been hoiping to break that stranglehold russia has by using new pieplines thru Georgia.  .

For western countries, the most valuable thing Georgia has is its strategic location for transport of oil from Azerbaijan.  And in case of war with Russia, Georgia would be a good place for NATO military bases.  Because it is a mountainous region on the border with Russia.  And defending the mountains is a lot easier than defending the plains.

Russia has a lot of mineral resources, including titanium and some rare metals that are used as catalysts in various industries.  Russia is the second largest exporter of oil, after Saudi Arabia.  And it is one of the biggest producers of natural gas.
