"drip" has said it all - needles match the material.   About the only needles he/ she didn't mention are one for leather which you can also buy from any good haberdashery or sewing machine shop, and twin needles which are fun to use and give some fantastic finishes.

Sewing machine needles will fit any sewing machine. The different sizes are for the different fabrics being sewn, not the different machines.

A universal needle is best to have on hand. A ball point needle is for knits. Most needle packs have the information on the back as to which fabric they are for.

Make sure to change you needle often. After every outfit or 2 sewn is a good time to change it.
